The BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Brand Management degree at Cardiff Met is designed for students wishing to develop a career within the buying, trend forecasting, merchandising and brand management functions of the dynamic fashion industry. This course benefits from being able to offer access to the Business and Management foundation year, intended for students wishing to enrol onto a three-year honours degree within the School of Management, who fall into one of the following categories:

With new technologies and social communication media on the rise, the skills covered within this programme are more in demand than ever. During this course you will develop the key skills and understanding required for the fashion business. On successful completion of the course you will have the skills to gain a position in fashion buying and brand management, putting your skills to use in positions in buying, merchandising, sourcing, product development, trend research, product management, marketing, brand development and management and more.

Nicole Dunlop is the programme director. Nicole's career began with a degree in clothing and management at Manchester University where she was sponsored by Marks & Spencer, this also included a short spell in Paris at the Sorbonne. She started her career with Jaeger, as a member of their buying team, and eventually moved on to become the sourcing manager for Adams. Having gained a qualification for marketing with the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) Nicole moved on to manage various consultancy projects with various retailers throughout Europe including Etam, Graduate Fashion Week, Harrods, Karstadt, La Rinascente, London Fashion Week, Matalan, Tencel, and Wrangler. She ultimately became head of marketing for the Hunter family of brands (best known for their iconic green welly), transforming it from the historic workwear brand into the fashion icon that it is today. Nicole gained a distinction in her Post Graduate Teaching degree and has extensive experience teaching at degree and masters level at several London business Universities, and CIM.


Mikael Persson is fashion lecturer in Future and Innovation, Creative Digital and Visual Communications. He graduated with a degree in Design Technology for the Fashion Industry followed by experience working with brands such as Michiko Koshino and Alexander McQueen and ran a London-based fashion streetwear brand, delivering graphic printed apparels to trend savvy, ethically conscious millennials and Gen Z consumers. Mikael entered fashion related education as a creative digital specialist to develop a strategy for delivering digital skills to fashion students based on industry demand. In addition to completing a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for Post Compulsory Education Mikael has also completed a Post Graduate Cert in Learning and Teaching Art and Design at Higher Education, from which he achieved a 1st. His ongoing research interests include current and future creative fashion tech, design and visual communication.


MSc Strategic Fashion Management provides highly structured trainings leading to a unique qualification. Students begin at undergraduate level and are awarded a Masters degree upon completion. The course offers many opportunities for students to develop transferable skills which are highly demanded within the fashion industry. Graduates are well placed for careers within the competitive global fashion industry as well as other industries.


This is a course for people interested in acquiring comprehensive knowledge of the fashion industry, with an emphasis on the product, purchasing and merchandising. Ideal for those who want to learn the ins and outs of fashion buying or diversify their professional options in the sector.


The programme encompasses elements of fashion design, fashion business, fashion branding and textile design degree routes. You will be taught in mixed groups alongside students from other Fashion & Textiles pathways providing a platform for you to share with and learn from others, while developing visual communication skills and processes. It will help you in building confidence and independence ready for the next stage of your degree.


After successful completion of your foundation year, you will have the flexibility to switch (should you wish to change direction) onto a number of related undergraduate degree programmes within the School of Fashion and Textiles.


I'm so glad that I did the foundation course here because it is a great stepping stone before the degree level and I think I came into my first year feeling much more confident than I ever would have done if it wasn't for the foundation year. This module will introduce you to the buying and merchandising principles, and the roles and responsibilities of a buyer and merchandiser, in relation to the fashion industry. You will understand how the buyers and merchandisers work together, within different retail formats.


Fashion Buying (elective unit)This unit explores the fast-paced world of global fashion buying and maps the evolution from traditional season driven buying to contemporary drop-based fashion. You will investigate the ethical and environmental issues around the fashion industry and explore opportunities for the fashion buyer to effect positive change as well as drive sales and profits through their buying strategies.


Designed to produce highly employable graduates with a sound understanding of the fashion industry, our Fashion Business and Management degree gives students the chance to benefit from our extensive industry links and from events such as London Fashion Week.


Apply the principles of buying, merchandising and product development within the global fashion environment. You will establish the tools and techniques required for successful product planning and range building through different learning opportunities. You will apply your data analytics and trend prediction skills to tailor a commercial range for the fashion consumer.


On this module you will investigate how the industry identifies and interprets fashion trends through to range planning in line with industry practice. Emerging technologies have seen the role of buying and distribution change significantly. You will also look at how this has transformed the complexities of product category management and product development across mainstream and luxury markets in the fashion industry.


If you do not yet meet the minimum requirements for entry straight onto this degree course, or feel you are not quite ready for the transition to Higher Education, this is a great option for you. Passing a foundation year guarantees you a place on this degree course the following academic year.
